I just watched the video of the man who's home burned and he has been living in his yard.  Is there anyway RNW listeners can do to help him?

Is the power and water able to be turned back on or is it off because of damage from the fire and they wont turn it back on until repairs are made.
It does appear that Mr. Dixon could use some help from the community!

Someone let us know the best course of action...

I don't know. We were hit by a tornado in in 84 and I wolld not leave ny house either. My insurance would have covered me staying somewhere else. but I wanted to protect what was left. I was a Deer hunter and had the stuff for living outside. Will follow this.

I think due to the damage in the home, the power and water can not be turned back on until repairs are made.

Well, I know we have clean it or lien it around here...blighted properities are subject to seizure. Seems to me the property's worth something.  Were I him, I would sell it as fast as I could and get what I could for it ($20k or so for the land?) and then get into a rental where I could get cleaned up and get a job, start rebuilding my life.

Does anyone know what needs to be done for the house to be deemed fit for living?

Anyone know approx how much it would cost?  Surely we can talk to some of the local builders, maybe they could each donate a day if we could gets the parts donated or bought?

I will be glad to help organize helping to clean up around his house and maybe have a huge yard sale and all the proceeds go to helping this man out someway.  I have alot of things to sell and my mom lives just 2 doors down from this house..I could see if we could have a yard sale there one weekend.  Maybe we can get some of the RNW people together and help clean up and donate items to help with the yard sale? Lets see about getting this man a job and a cheap place to stay.

Southern Rain, I hope he gets some assistant. The day after we got hit I had all kinda contractors to show up, sheet rock guys, roofers, tree cleaners, guys that would do it all. Now is the time to sit back and think. What needs to be done first? Gotta have water for the comode, unless you have a water sourse for buckets.  At first I did not need lights as I had laterns and a power inverter for my vehicle.

I learned pretty quick, these people dwell on grief and insurance money, gonna tell you what, Home Depot gave away stuff. The next morning I called Smith Evans to order some lumber to replace my bridge, they told me they were busy because of a tornado, I said yea I know, thats where my bridge went.........they were here within the hour.

We are blessed to live in a county where people are willing to help others. Not just in this country but the rest of the world. But by the same token, I do the best to take care of me and mine.

Jerry, how bad is the house, what all is needed to get it liveable again? Surely, some of the local lumber places would donate some items.

It appears that there is mostly smoke and water damage from what he said.

I did not go in the house, just around the outside.

I would estimate at a minimum, 5 to 10k

Sadly, this is typical of the city of Rome.  He is considered more of a nuisance than a citizen - someone city officials need to get rid of instead of helping.  It is truly unbelievable that with all of the money flowing through this city's churches, like West Rome Baptist, this man cannot get some help to rebuild his house.  I ate dinner at Ryan's last night and it will be the last time I give them any money.  They charge $25 for two people to eat dinner and they can't help one of their own employees??  Instead, they fire him??

What does West Rome Baptist have to do with it? I know, first hand, that West Rome does lots to help citizens of this county. If he needs assistance all he needs to do is contact someone at West Rome Baptist or any other church for that matter.

That house has major damage. Possibly strutural damage. It will more than likely need to be completely scuttled and rebuilt. He cannot sell the property, because it belongs to his mother. I don't know if he could ever get enough help to get it all done. In other words if he doesn't get enough to do the whole thing then it may be pointless to rebuild. It may be more feasible to help him get a job and find a new place to live.
